Words like: color, honor etc. are spelt as written as this “American” spelling was the author’s normal custom.
Many words begin with Capital Letters. Again this was clearly the author’s custom at the time.
Weights of gold are in dwt. or oz. These are Troy measures standing for pennyweight and ounce respectively. One ounce Troy is 20 pennyweight One pound Troy is 12 ounces or 5,760 grains One pound Avoirdupois (the one in normal use) is 7,000 grains One Kilogram is 2.2 pounds Avoirdupois
The original manuscript contains ammendations, both in pen and pencil. As it appears that the pencil amendations were made after the time of writing, the pen amendations have been incoporated into the markup, while the pencil ones have not.
