Being Born

There was black moss
and a black doris
plum (my head)

I slipped out
on the carpet
My skin was red

She has a nice little
my sister said

Umbilical cord
said my mother
through sweat

Black mushrooms
under the bed

Where to go

I am considering blowing my nose
in Buenos Aires or perhaps

going to Guangzhou to think
about my bank balance.

There is the option
of mulling on my father’s

faults at Fort Myers, or feeling guilty
about my Nana in Nagpur.

I could go to New York
to catch a yellow

flower in the footpath
or be surprised by a cat

in Dharamsala. I might like to feel
an ant on my inner arm

in Amsterdam, or find a nipple
to suck in Nepal. Maybe

there’s a black and white bird
in Antarctica which will

turn its head in my direction
and I’ll feel fine gravel like a toothbrush

under my thumb.
