The Diary of James Brogden, August 1871 – December 1872

[entry]

On Sunday we went to St Paul’s where the Service was exactly like that at Tondu Church. After page 92 Lunch we went to Port Lyttleton with the Superintendent of the Province, Mr Rolleston, saw the town and harbour, and also the tunnel, a mile and a half long, which was a great work for a Province in those early days. The Railway from Lyttelton to Christchurch was very expensive, costing about £16,000 per mile. A free pass by this railway was granted to us.
