Victoria College Students' Carnival. Thursday 29th June 1905

Victoria Inversa

page 12

Victoria Inversa.

Churn'd across the harbour
Charter'd ferry-boat,
Minstrels' twing-twang setting
Young hearts all a-doat;
Reps. of rival factions
Scored another way
At the Students' Picnic
On that Easter day.

Whilst the bashful pilot
Wooed yon fickle pier,
How we held our hampers!
(But beheld no Beere!)
After ladies' hockey,
After football field,
(Dance's remnants) destined
Solace all to yield.

Pleasantly the noontide
Stroll'd around to night:
From the bush who dallied
Sirens called to light;
At the Hall assembled
Consciously they came;
Rush'd their seats for supper—
Cakes and tea, the same.

Talk of Tower of Babel!
Talk of Togo's gun!
Nought to that bun-scramble
Heard at Wellington,
When, a mass of blushes
And apology,
Over his intended
"Ike" capsized the tea!

'Bove the roar ensuing
Some caught murmurs such—
"Oh! You clumsy beast, you!"— (ladies)
"Did it wet you much? "—(men)
Then the discord concert—
Southern smoke-o first—
Froggy's recitations!! -Ugh! —(pause)
(Memory accurst!)

Out in lunar darkness,
Pour'd that pairing throng,
Cram'd aboard the Countess —
Alack! The lights were strong,
So, with due decorum
Sang the whole way, when
(O tempora! O horae!)
We got there after ten.

L'envci.
Gone is gay Otago
Back to gruesome graft;
Canterbury's bravest
Wept upon their craft;
Auckland with her drubbing
"Shunted "; but I ween,
None will in a hurry
Forget where they have been.

(One for the referee!)
Now all Student fellows
Raise a throat with me
For that man of patience,
For the brave M.C.—
He's: All! Right!
Who Is? Dixon Is! (men, recitative)
Long life to our Georgie
And all who may be his.

"Tuna."
