Act II.

Song by Bosun and Sailors

Bosun: When the gallant ship is ploughing through the ocean—
All: Through the ocean,
Bosun: When the wooden walls are rolling on the sea—
All: On the sea,
Bosun: We may sometimes feel a slight inside commotion
All: 'Side commotion,
Bosun: But we leave our little troubles on the lee—
All: On the lee!
Bosun: And when she's lying proudly in the harbour—
All: In the harbour,
Bosun: Can you wonder, with our uniform complete—
All: 'Form complete,
Bosun: And assistance from the draper and the barber—
All: And the barber,
Bosun: That we catch the eye of every girl we meet—
All: Girl we meet?

All: When there's unofficial duty to be done—
To be done
Then a sailor's life is quite a happy one.

Bosun: But when howitzers and things begin to thunder—
All: 'Gin to thunder,
Bosun: And the chances are we'll climb the Golden Stairs—
All: Golden Stairs,
Bosun: In the circumstances is it any wonder—
All: Any wonder,
Bosun: That we think of all our sins and say our prayers—
All: Say our prayers?
Bosun: But when the dreadful cannonade is over—
All: 'Ade is over,
Bosun: And we've washed the scuppers clean of human gore—
All: Human gore,
Bosun: The delightful sense of wallowing in clover—
All: 'Ing in clover
Bosun: Sets us cursing twice as loudly as before—
All: As before!
All: When in peril, there is penance to be done—
To be done;
For a sailor's life's a very naughty one—
Naughty one!
