Carry on Phil [1960]

Where is Phil Andrews? — N.Z.'s Forgotten Hero

Where is Phil Andrews?

N.Z.'s Forgotten Hero

Even our youngest readers will remember the name Phil Andrews, the legendary figure of New Zealand rugby. Tens of thousands cherish the memory of this rugby hero's prowess. His ability to play the game for the sake of winning made him the complete footballer.

The polish he gave to his play endeared him to purists throughout the country, yet his natural talent and flair for the unorthodox put him at the top for five consecutive seasons.

A veteran of 15 internationals, Phil Andrews climaxed his rugby career with a brilliant try in the final test in 1956. During his six years in first class rugby he set a points record which is unlikely to be bettered for many years to come.

In the 1955 season Phil had an average of three tries per match, apart from his excellent kicking record which, in Half Truth's opinion, is unsurpassed.

Last week, Half Truth set out to find Phil Andrews for an interview about the type of rugby he thinks is needed to win this season. But this is what we found! Phil Andrews has been forgotten by the very people whose parks were crowded each week to see him play—the people who arranged the matches forgot to arrange for Phil!

Perhaps the reason for Phil's failure in business is due to the well known fact that the power of his brain does not match the power of his right foot.
