Carry on Phil [1960]

Act 1. Scene 3

Act 1. Scene 3.

He is picked up by Mabel and taken to Wal, who does his best to convince Phil that the best thing for the country is for him (Phil) to allow his teams to be nationalised. The Government would run the lot, pay the players average public service salaries, and collect the whacking great profits. "Why" says Wal. "We'll bankrupt the N.Z.R.U. in no time at all." Somehow, however, Phil is not impressed and refuses the extremely generous offer. On this note he departs to join his players, who are, of course, staying at the newest Tourist Hotel Corporation fireproof hotel — The Hotel de Borch.

Barefoot Phil.

Who is the man all the fan's adore?
Barefoot Phil from Wopwopville
Runs down the field like a meteor
Barefoot Phil from Wopwopville
Lucky we are to be having him
Barefoot Phil from Wopwopville
Just when the future was looking grim
Barefoot Phil from Wopwopville
Came a long long way
From Kuripuku Bay
To use a phrase of journalese
His feet are fleet as Mercury's
We're here for him
To cheer for him
We'll even drink a beer for him
For Barefoot Phil from Wopwopville
Fill Fill Fill Fill Fill
Fill up your glasses and drink a toast
Barefoot Phil from Wopwopvillie
Here's to the man that we love the most
Barefoot Phil from Wopwopvillie
He rose to fame
Because he played the game
His boots are just about red hot
From kicking goals from any spot
Goal Goal Goal Goal Goal Penalties
Converted tries
For those he always takes the prize
Barefoot Phil from Wopwopvillie
Phil Phil Phil Phil Phil
Fills his adversaries with despair
Barefoot Phil from Hickville
Runs like a bat out of you know where
Barefoot Phil from Hickville
Look out
Look out
Look out
Look out
For Barefoot Phil
The barefoot boy
From Wopwopville
Phil Phil Phil
Phil Phil Phil

Together

Wherever we go
Whatever we do
We gonna go through it together

They say we are through
And maybe it's true
We've got to go through it together

For stooping to election bids now
Like to give 15 bob for the kids now
They're saying that we're on the skids now
Get rids now
Together

So stick out your chin Through thick and thru thin
You know what we're in
Yes we know

I'll vote for you
You vote for me
We'll muddle through whatever we do
Together wherever we go

Whatever they say
Whatever they do
They'll do it to us all together

Who ever we blame
We know just the same
That we're going to get it together

page 5

The compliments we get are back-handed
The FOL's nearly disbanded
It's forced us to haul down our standard
We're Stranded
Together

The old ship of state
Will disintegrate
I'm Captain
I'm Cook
I'm first mate
I scratch your back
If you'd scratch mine
We'll muddle through whatever we do
Together wherever we go
