Mr. John Williamson

Mr. John Williamson, who was a member without portfolio of the Executive Council in the Fox Ministry, which guided the Colony's affairs from the 12th of July to the beginning of August, 1861, was for many years a prominent figure in the City of Auckland. In 1845, with Mr. W. C. Wilson, he founded the page 69 New Zealander newspaper, which for twenty years was a power in the political life of the Colony. Mr. Williamson was three times elected Superintendent of the Province of Auckland. A man of broad and liberal views, he was returned to the House of Representatives for an Auckland constituency, and continued a member till his death in 1875. Mr. Williamson took part in establishing the institutions of the Colony; he was one of the founders of the Bank of New Zealand.
