Councillor James Joseph Devine

Councillor James Joseph Devine who is one of the representatives of Cook Ward in the Wellington City Council, was born in Tipperary, Ireland, in 1856. He received his education chiefly at the Irish National schools. Mr. Devine came to New Zealand per sailing ship, arriving in Wellington in 1876. He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1883, being just a year before the completion of his articles, which he served to Sir Patrick Buckley. In 1884 he practised his profession on his own account, and shortly after[unclear: w]ards was joined in partnership by Mr. H. S. Fitzherbert, then M.H.R. for the Hutt. Since the dissolution of the firm, Mr. Devine has continued his professional career alone. He was elected a member of the City Council in 1893. Mr. Devine is socially a very popular many and takes a great interest in all intellectual pursuits He has been president of the Catholic Literary Society, and of the Irish National League, besides filling a great many other positions connected with literary societies in Wellington.
