Mr. Andrew Young

Mr. Andrew Young, who served the City in the Council from September, 1878, to September, 1881, was born in Dungannon, County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1834. He came out to the colonies in 1855, landing in Melbourne, Mr. W. R. Wilson, well known in sporting circles, being a shipmate. Two years after arrival Mr. Young commenced his career in the coaching business, in which he was employed for five years on the line between Geelong and Ballarat. Coming to Otago in 1862, he found employment with Cobb and Co., on the road between Dunedin and Tokomairo, the Dunstan and Oamaru. Here he remained till 1868, when he removed

page 296 to Christchurch, and crossing over the Southern Alps to Hokitika, took the management of the West Coast coaches. After six months Mr. Young joined Mr. Shepherd in establishing the firm of W. H. Shepherd and Co. They were successful in 1871 in obtaining a contract for carrying the mails between Wellington and New Plymouth, at £3000 per year for six years. On the death of his partner by drowning during the first year of partnership, Mr. Young carried on the business, solely conducting it till 1882. when he sold the plant to Haswell and McKinnon. At this time he retired from business, but has since been interested with Mr. Cassidy in the Christchurch-Hokitika line of coaches between 1891 and 1894. Mr. Young contested the mayoralty of the City against Messrs. Fisher and Hutchison, being defeated by three votes only. [Since the above was in type, Mr. Young has joined the great majority. He died on the 17th of September, 1895.]
