Mr. William Shilling

Mr. William Shilling, Pilot to the Wellington Harbour Board, was born on the 5th of November, 1848, at Faversham, Kent England. He left school when ten years of age and worked some time at the building trade. At fourteen he joined the English Navy and served two years, when he joined the merchant service. In 1868 he arrived in Wellington by the ship “St. Vincent,” which was wrecked in Palliser Bay on her way to Lyttelton,

page 322 and twenty-two lives lost. He then sailed in vessels on the Coast, and was master successively of three vessels belonging to Messrs. Fell Brothers, of Blenheim. He joined the pilot service in 1877 as coxswain and assistant pilot at the Heads, and on the retirement of Mr. Holmes he was appointed to fill that gentleman's position of pilot. This office he held until the service at the Heads was abolished and headquarters removed to the wharf, where he now fills the position of second pilot. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, having for some years been a member of the Lodge Waterloo. He has also been a member of the Sir George Bowen Lodge of Foresters for the past wenty years. He was married on the 13th of April, 1874, to Harriett, the youngest daughter of the late Mr. George Mexted, of Johnsonville, and has a family of three boys and three girls.
