building, which was erected in the “forties” in Manners Street, was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1856. It was superseded by a commodious wooden structure, which was burnt down on the 15th of June, 1879. The large building which is now used as above was opened in March, 1880. It is built of wood, and has a gallery on each side, and will accommodate about 1200 worshippers. Behind the Church, which has a large organ, imported at a cost of over £600, there is a very convenient schoolroom—one of the finest in the Colony—having numerous class rooms, and further back there is an infants' room. There are over eight hundred scholars, including infants, in attendance at the Sunday School. The young men's and young women's classes meet in large and commodious class-rooms, and are well attended. Fronting Taranaki Street, a large and comfortable parsonage, containing eleven good rooms, besides small apartments, has been erected. The land occupied is a splendid section of one acre in extent, and together with the buildings cost £12,000. In connection with Wesley Church is one of the oldest Mutual Improvement Societies in the Colony, the meetings are noted for the spirit and interest, which are well maintained. A fairly strong Christian Endeavour Society is making its influence felt in connection with the Church, and a Band of Hope is doing good work among the Sunday School children. There are some efficient mission bands, which go put from this evangelistic centre, and are working in the surroundin'g districts. Wesley Church is the head of the Wellington Circuit, in which there are four other churches, viz., Newtown, seating 450; Thorndon, accommodating 250; Johnsonville, with 100 sittings; and a pretty church at Karori, newly erected, to seat 140.
