The Hon. Walter Woods Johnston

page 508

The Hon. Walter Woods Johnston, whose career as a Minister of the Crown is referred to on page 81, was appointed a director of the Bank of New Zealand in 1894, when the head office of that institution was tranferred to the capital. In December, 1895, Mr. Johnston resigned his position as a director representing the shareholders of the Bank, and was appointed a director of the institution in the interests of the Government, in compliance with the banking legislation of the session of 1895. Mr. Johnston was one of the committee appointed in the year 1888 by the shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand to make an investigation into its condition, and advise as to the steps to be taken to place the Bank on a sounder and more satisfactory basis. The honourable gentleman, who is a recognise[gap — reason: illegible] authority on financial matters, is senior partner in the old established firm of Johnston and Co., merchants, Wellington.
