Mr. Robert Gemmell Gibson

Mr. Robert Gemmell Gibson, Manager of the Wellington Branch of the Bank of Australasia, was born in Ayr, Scotland, in 1840, being the youngest son of the late Mr Thomas Gibson, who was accountant of the Bank of Scotland in Ayr. He was educated at Ayr Academy, and at private schools in the south of England. Coming out to Australia in 1855, per ship “Queen of the Seas,” he landed in Melbourne on the 13th of page 503 November of that year, and after some two years in mercantile pursuits in Melbourne, he joined the staff of the Bank of Australasia in October, 1857. In 1863 Mr. Gibson became teller at the Sandhurst branch, and two years later was promoted to the position of accountant. Transferred to Castlemaine in the same capacity in 1867, he became manager of that branch in 1869, remaining in charge till 1881. For the following ten years Mr. Gibson was manager of the Bank at Sandhurst, which is now called Bendigo. In 1891 he removed to Wellington, taking up the position he now occupies. He is one of the oldest officers in the Bank's service, Mr. Gibson was married in Castlemaine in August, 1872, to the eldest daughter of Dr. Wark, of Adelaide, South Australia, and has three daughters. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, E.C., but is unattached in New Zealand.
