Captain George Coltar, of the s.s. “Duke of Sutherland,” was born at Kent, England, in 1861, and was educated at the Isle of Wight. After leaving school he went to sea serving his time in vessels belonging to Mr. Thomas Skinner's Castle line, trading to China and India. After some years' experience with several shipping firms, Captain Coltar joined the Duke line in 1887. His first trip to New Zealand was in the “Duke of Westminster” as third officer in 1889. He afterwards became chief officer of the “Duke of Buckingham” for some time, and in 1895 he was promoted to the command of the “Duke of Sutherland.”
