Government House

Government House.

His Excellency the Governor, the Earl of Glasgow, G.C.M.G., having completed his term of service in New Zealand, left the Colony on the 6th of February, 1897, departing from the Queen's Wharf, Wellington, by the s.s. “Talune” for Sydney, New South Wales, on his way to England. A vast concourse of people thronged the wharves and steamers to bid adieu to one of the most popular Governors that the Colony has ever had. Lord and Lady Glasgow and family stood on the steamer's bridge, and as the vessel swept by the end of the wharf they waved their farewells 'midst the enthusiastic cheering of the military escort and citizens assembled.

His Excellency The Administrator Of The Government, the Hon. Sir James Prendergast, B.A. (Chief Justice of the Colony), by virtue of his dormant commission, was sworn in as Administrator of the Government of New Zealand, early on Monday, the 8th of February, 1897.
