Mr. John McEffer Shera

Mr. John McEffer Shera, who represented Auckland City in the House of Representatives for three years, was elected to that position in 1890 at the head of the poll, and remained a member until the election of 1893. Mr. Shera was born at Cootehill, County Cavan, Ireland, in 1840, and is a son of Mr. John Shera, a timber and general merchant of Cootehill. He was educated at Wesley College, Sheffield, and learned the soft goods business with Messrs. McArthur and Co. at Londonderry. At the conclusion of his apprenticeship he returned to his native town to manage his father's business, but in 1867, when only twenty-seven years of age, received an offer from his old employers to visit South Australia, with power of attorney, to wind up the Adelaide business of the firm. This done, in the following year he crossed over to New Zealand and established the firm of McArthur, Shera and Co. in Auckland, of which he was managing partner. This partnership was dissolved in 1877, but until recently Mr. Shera continued in the soft goods line. He is now a sharebroker with offices in Queen Street. In 1873 Mr. Shera was married to the eldest daughter of the late Colonel Balneavis, and has one daughter and five sons. He holds the position of Commissioner of Education Reserves, is a member of the Conciliation Board for the Auckland Industrial District, and a trustee of the Auckland Savings Bank.
