Professor Charles William. Egerton

Professor Charles William. Egerton, M.A., Dublin. Senior Moderator and Gold Medalist, and Professor of Auckland University College, was born in 1862. Professor Egerton's university career is a brilliant one, as the following list of honours will testify. In the year 1881 he obtained entrance prizes in English and French at Trinity College, Dublin, and second of the first class exhibitions for general scholarship with honours in five subjects at the Royal University of Ireland. In 1882 he was First of the first class prizes in English Language, etc., at Trinity College, Dublin, and First of the first class exhibitions for general scholarships with honours in English, etc., in the Royal University. In 1885 he took his B.A. degree with first class honours and gold medal. From 1883 until 1889 he gained the following prizes and honours at Trinity College, Dublin:—First of the first class prizes in English language, etc. (1883); First of first class prizes in modern literature (1884); Senior Moderatorship and gold medal in modern literature (1885); the Early English Text Society's prize, the New Shakespeare Society's prize (1886); and the vice-chancellor's prize in English prose composition (1888–9). In 1890 he was appointed lecturer for three years on English language and literature in Queen Margaret College, Glasgow, an institution devoted to the higher education of women. During his residence in Glasgow, he was appointed lecturer on English literature and modern history to the West of Scotland University Extension Board. Some years ago he published for the use of Honour candidates in the Royal University an edition of Swift's “Battle of the Books,” with an introduction and notes; and was commissioned by Messrs Methuen and Co. to write a book on “The English Novel and its Principles of Development.”
