The Church Of The Sacred Heart

The Church Of The Sacred Heart. situated in Ponsonby Road, is built of wood and lined with kauri. Prettily surrounded by trees, with porches over the two side entrances, and windows of figured glass, the church externally presents a typical ecclesiastical appearance. The building seats 400 worshippers, and was opened on the 6th of January, 1887, at cost of about £2200, including the site. The School of the Sacred Heart is a separate wooden building, adjoining the church. It is a day school, attended by about 120 children, and is conducted by the Sisters of Mercy. This part of Ponsonby was formerly in the parish of St. Patrick's, but in the Eastertide of 1885 Bishop Luck created it a separate parish under the charge of the Very Rev. Dr. Egan, O.S.B. The services were then held in the chapel of St. Mary's Convent. Subsequently the Rev. Father Lenihan (now Bishop of Auckland) was appointed to the charge, and it was mainly through his exertions that the present church was erected. In 1891 the Rev. Father Lenihan, having taken charge of the parish of Parnell, was succeeded at the Church of the Sacred Heart by the Rev. Father Gillan. On the Bishop's return from Europe, in July, 1900, the Very
