Fraser, George And Sons

Fraser, George And Sons, Limited (George Fraser), Engineers, Boiler Makers, Iron and Brass Founders, etc., Auckland. Head office and branch foundry, corner of Albert Street and Customs Street West (opposite the Custom House); principal works, Stanley Street. Messrs George Fraser and Sons possess one of the largest industrial establishments in the Colony. The foundry in Stanloy Street covers nearly two acres of land, and in busy seasons about one hundred hands are employed. The business was established in the early days, and the firm soon acquired a widespread reputation; indeed, few industrial firms have been better known to the public than that of Fraser and Tinne. Many of the largest contracts executed in the Colony have been creditably carried out by Messrs Fraser and Sons, to whom nothing comes amiss. The machine shop is 132 feet in length, and contains a lathe, about 25 feet long, and an extra large one for turning anything up to 8 feet in diameter or three tons in weight. Planing, drilling, nibbing, and many other machines occupy the room, and tramways are laid down in all directions to facilitate the moving of the heavy weights. The largest planing machine will take in a piece of iron 10 feet long by 4 feet wide and high In the blacksmith's shop there are two steam hammers, besides, of course, all the ordinary appliances. In the moulding room there are three cupolas, and a single casting of six tons in weight can be made without difficulty. Messrs Fraser and Sons do a very large shipping trade, and many of the articles made at their works are of enormous weight. The erecting shop is fitted with a ten-ton crane, and other weight-lifting appliances. At the smaller foundry in Customs Street, a great deal of the lighter work is done, especially for the shipping, to which it is so very handy. Mr. G. Fraser, senior, having withdrawn from the firm, the whole of the works are now under the management of Mr. G. Fraser, junior, who is ably assisted by his brothers.
