Porter, E. and Co.

Porter, E. and Co., Wholesale and Retail Ironmongers, Hardware Merchants, and Importers, Etc., Queen Street, Auckland. The oldest-established firm of ironmongers in Auckland is that of E. Porter and Co. It was originally founded by Mr. Edward Porter, who now resides in London, some years before 1871, when it was taken over by Mr. Alfred Porter, son of Mr. Edward Porter, Mr. James Hardie, ana Mr. John Chambers, now of John Chambers and Son, Limited. At a later period, Mr. Chambers retired, leaving in partnership Messrs Alfred Porter and James Hardie. The growth of E. Porter and Co. from a small beginning to a firm with premises extending from Queen Street in High Street, and also with large stores in High Street, O'Connell Street, and William Street, is indicative of high business qualities in those who have guided the firm to a leading position in the mercantile world of New Zealand. In addition to the firm's retail shop in Queen Street, it has also branches in Upper Symonds Street and Newton, where large stocks are kept to supply the firm's suburban customers.
