Mr. George Sinclair Reston

Mr. George Sinclair Reston, late Governor of the Auckland Gaol, and Probation Officer for the Auckland district, was born in Kent, England, in 1844, and came to the Colony in the ship “John Taylor” in 1853, landing at Lyttelton. He was educated in Canterbury, at the old Church of England School, and at the Rev. J. D. Fergusson's private academy. Mr. Reston entered the Public Works Department of the Canterbury Provincial Government and spent a year or two on the West Coast. In 1867, his father being at that time Governor of the Lyttelton Gaol, Mr. Reston joined the prison service in Lyttelton, and some eight years later, having in the meantime had control of the store, was placed in charge of the gaol at Addington, where he remained until 1883, when he was transferred to Auckland. Mr. Reston was married in 1873 to Miss Fanny Burston, daughter of Mr. Henry Burston, of Taunton, Somerset, and of ten children eight are sons. He resigned from the public service in January, 1900, and now lives in retirement in Auckland.
