Weatherburn, William

Weatherburn, William , Farmer, “Smithfield,” Mataura. Mr Weatherburn was born at Ditchburn, near Egglingham, Northumberland, England, in 1855, and was brought up to country life in his native county. He landed in Lyttelton, in 1879, by the ship “Crusader,” but went to Dunedin, where he remained seven months. After managing a farm at Otaraia for two years, Mr Weatherburn began farming at the same place, and remained there ten years. In August, 1892, he leased “Smithfield,” which is 400 acres in extent. The property, with the exception of about fifty acres, was in its natural state, but has since been fully cultivated as far as practicable, and produces very fair crops. Yields of forty-five bushels of wheat and sixty bushels of oats and barley, have been threshed, per acre. Mr Weatherburn has also a flock of crossbred sheep. He served as a member page 1096 and chairman of the Otaraia Road Board and school committee for some years. As a member of the Presbyterian church he was on the committee of management for nine years, and was ordained an elder in 1902. Mr Weatherburn was married, in 1879, in Scotland, to a daughter of Mr Adam Smith, of Chatto, Roxburghshire, and has three sons and four daughters.
