Sawmillers — Gate, William,

Sawmillers.

Gate, William, Sawmiller, Blenheim. Mr. Cate was born in Wairau, in October, 1859, and is the third son of the late Mr. George Cate, one of the pioneers of the province. He was educated at the Tua Marina public school, and was afterwards employed at sawmilling and farming in different parts of the Wairau. Mr. Cate's present mill was first established at Long Valley, in June, 1899, and when the bush was exhausted, it was removed to its present position at Flat Creek in May, 1905. Mr. Cate has timber rights over a wide area of rimu, maiti, and totara bush; fourteen persons are constantly employed, and the output of the mill, which amounts to 600,000 feet per year, is sent on waggons to Blenheim, where it finds a ready sale.
