Mr. Robert Benjamin Foote was born in the North of Scotland, where he was educated, and learned tailoring. He went to Australia at an early age, and shortly afterwards came to New Zealand, and spent a few years at pit-sawing in the Auckland province. Mr. Foote then went to Taranaki, where he took part in the Maori war, as an officer. In 1864, he removed to Nelson, and after working for many years at pit-sawing in various parts of the province, he settled in the Marlborough Sounds, where he farmed during the remaining years of his life. Mr. Foote lived until he was nearly ninety years of age, when he died at Mahua, in the Pelorus Sound, leaving six sons and four daughters.
