Former Members Of The Legislative Council.

The Hon. James Alexander Bonar was called to the Legislative Council in June, 1868, and continued a member until he died on the 7th of November, 1901. He is referred to in another article as the first and only Superintendent of the province of Westland.

The Hon. William Gisborne was a member of the Legislative Council in the sixties, and in 1877 he was elected a member of the House of Representatives for Grey. In 1886, he was appointed a member of the New Zealand Commission for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition. Mr. Gisborne is more fully referred to at page 71 of the Wellington volume of this Cyclopedia.

The Hon. Herman H. Lahmann, formerly a member of the Legislative Council for Westland, was appointed in the year 1872, and held office until his death in 1890. He had previously been a member of the original Westland County Council, of which he was elected chairman in 1872, and held the position until that system of Government was superseded by the inauguration of the provincial system.

The Honourable James Kerr was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1892. During the time he was in the Council he supported the Old Age Pensions Bill, the Factories Bill, and the Advances to Settlers Bill. Mr. Kerr opposed the Alcoholic Liquors Sales Control Bill. Prior to entering the Legislative Council. Mr. Kerr was prominent in local politics, and was for many years a borough councillor. He was also a member of the Greymouth Harbour Board, Education, Board, etc. Mr. Kerr died on the 25th of August, 1901.
