Major George Gwavas Carlyon

Major George Gwavas Carlyon, sometime of “Gwavas,” Tikokino, Hawke's Bay, was born on the family estate in Cornwall, England, on the 21st of July, 1824. According to “Burke's Landed Gentry” the Carlyon family is one of the oldest in Cornwall. The present head of the house, a son of the late Major Carlyon, is Mr. Arthur Spry Gwavas Carlyon, of “Gwavas,” Tikokino. Major Carlyon served many years in the Imperial Army; was Captain of the 1st Regiment of Foot, and served throughout the Crimean war, after which he came to New Zealand, page 399 and for a while settled at the Hutt, Wellington. About the year 1859 he bought a portion of the Gwavas station, where he resided up to the time of his death, which occurred on the 17th of October, 1875. Mrs. Carlyon, who is a daughter of Mr. Thomas Long, of Devonshire, England still resides at “Gwavas,” and there is a surviving family of two sonss and two daughters.
