Somebody's Garden

Somebody's Garden.

Somebody worked here long ago—
Planted this smiling pansy row;
There by the wall the sunflowers high
Nod to the lonely passer-by.
Here is an azure cornflower bed,
Close to the roses, white and red.
Look how the poppies skirt the walk,
Bright flag flying on slender stalk.
Somebody loved this tiny plot.
What since has been their earthly lot?
Why did they leave to straggle wild
Their tender little garden-child?
We cannot know. And yet to me,
Above the droning of the bee,
A voice is singing, pleasure-filled—
An echo time has never stilled.
