119 241 W. C. Wentworth Waikawaito All these claims were disallowed, the claimant not appearing. There appears to have been a kind of partnership between Messrs. Wentworth, Jones, Leathart, and others, of Sydney, in these claims. Mr. Wentworth endeavoured, in 1840, without success, to induce the Legislative Council of New South Wales to alter the proposed Land Claims Bill.

122 247 Peter Williams Preservation Bay, Otago 1832 225 0 0 1,480 Grant to claimant for 2,560 acres, 15th February, 1845. The grant was in May, 1853, surrendered to Mr. Commissioner Mantell, under an agreement by Sir George Grey to give £2,560 scrip in exchange. About 1,400 acres were chosen by the claimant and surveyed at Moeraki. The claimant claimed the right to select land to the amount of 2,560 acres in accordance with Sir G. Grey's agreement to allow him scrip for that quantity; but the Commissioner declined to admit this right, and offered him a grant for 1,000 acres in settlement of the claim, which has hitherto been refused.
