Biographical.

John Davies Ormond (born at Wallingford, England, in 1832) became private secretary to Lieutenant-Governor Eyre, of New Munster, in 1848, and then clerk to the Executive Council. In 1851 he took up land in Hawke's Bay, and, in 1859, gained a seat on the Hawke's Bay Provincial Council, later becoming superintendent. He entered Parliament in 1861 as M.H.R. for Clive, and, in 1869, was appointed Government Agent for the East Coast. From 1884 till 1889 he was M.H.R. for Napier. He held Cabinet rank in several ministries. In 1891 he was appointed a life member of the Legislative Council. He died on 6 October, 1917. Ormond-ville, as well as Ormond, was named after him. Jack Ormond (Tiaki Omana), M.P. for Eastern Maori District, is a grandson.
