ROSS, Malcolm 1862–1930

Born Dunedin, son of Alexander Ross: attended Palmerston High School and Otago University. Had a journalistic career on the staff of Otago Daily Times. Was private secretary to Sir James Mills. Visited Samoa 1899 during the hostilities there: in 1914–18 war was official correspondent with NZ Forces in Egypt, Gallipoli, and France. Was a pioneer in alpine climbing and exploration, and became vice-president of the NZ Alpine Club. Wrote Aorangi pub. 1892, Through Tuhoe Land pub. 1904, A Climber in New Zealand pub. 1914. Exhibited OAS 1893–97.
