Nineteenth Century New Zealand Artists: A Guide & Handbook

ROUNTREE, Harry 1878–1951

ROUNTREE, Harry 1878–1951

Born Auckland, son of Gilbert Rountree, manager of the Auckland Savings Bank, and nephew of artist Edwin Bartley. Studied with L. J. Steele and with Kennett Watkins. 1901 went to London, contributed to Punch, The Sketch etc, and became a well-known illustrator of books of travel and children's books, and a designer of posters. Was praised highly for his illustrations of an edition of Alice in Wonderland. Was President of the London Sketch Club. Is given as a working member of CSA in 1912–13 but there seems no evidence that he was in New Zealand at that time unless he came on a visit to his uncle, Edwin Bartley, who was by then a leading member of the Society. When Pat Lawlor was producing his New Zealand Artists' Annual, Harry Rountree sent out work to be reproduced. Work included Centennial Ex Wtn 1940. Represented: ACAG.
