STOKES, Capt. John Lort RN

Captain of HMS Acheron, visited New Zealand 1848–49; at one time it was thought he had painted a skilful and attractive watercolour of Milford Sound, held in Turnbull; it is now thought to have been painted by W. J. W. Hamilton, at that time on the Acheron, but it is not certain.
