STUART, Samuel (Sam Stuart) 1855–1920
Arrived with his parents in Auckland on Caduceus. His father was also Samuel Stuart so that the painter Sam Stuart was known as S. Stuart Jnr. during his father's life. As well as painting the Auckland of the time painted many scenes of early Auckland taken from photographs, and possibly from some early sketches and engravings: some of these he had reproduced and published, copyrighted 1904–06. Exhibited with Society of Artists, Auckland 1877; ASA from 1884; was secretary of the NZ Art Students Assoc 1884–85, and secretary of the ASA for many years almost to the end of his life.
