WEBBER, John RA 1753–1793
Born in London. Was official artist on Cook's third voyage into the Pacific 1776–80. On his return employed by the Admiralty making finished drawings and oils from which engravings were taken for the Atlas to the official account of the voyage. Sixteen Pacific views, one of them of Queen Charlotte's Sound New Zealand, were published as soft-ground etchings in Views in the South Seas 1st ed. pub. 1790.
