WELCH, Joseph Sandell 1841–1918

Born London, arrived New Zealand 1865; a surveyor and explorer. page 251 Was one of founders of OAS 1876 and a member of first committee; exhibited with them 1876–82, painting mostly watercolours. Was father of painter Nugent Welch. Died in Wellington. He painted in a strong individual way. A collection of his work is in Turnbull.
