WYLEY, Joseph 1870–1948

Born Staffordshire: educated at Shrewsbury School. Emigrated to New Zealand in 1890s and worked as paying cadet to learn farming on Mr Burns's property, Matarawa Valley. Later worked on Riverlea, Wanganui, owned by Mr Henry Sarjeant. 1897 visited England, in 1899 married Alice Platt and bought Riverlea. Was essentially self taught as an artist, though in later life he took lessons from C. Hay Campbell in Wanganui. Member of Wanganui Art Society.
