BUCKLAND, Jessie Lilian 1878–1939
Born Otago, youngest daughter of J. C. Buckland, sister of talented painter Mrs Rachel Susan Christabel Orbell, niece of surveyor/ painter Edwin Fairburn. Although she sketched as did her relatives, she became interested in photography after her family moved to Taieri Lake Station, in 1893. The originality and charm of her work won her prizes early in Australasian competitions. Did not marry page 55 but specalised in photography and established own photographic business Akaroa. Her Akaroa landscapes not only made her known in Banks Peninsula but won her prizes in Dominion photographic competitions. Sketchbooks, 1903–1914, in Hocken.
