CLAYTON, Capt. Matthew Thomas 1831–1922
Born Sussex, arrived Auckland May 1864 and took position as Marine Surveyor; became known as a marine artist, and painted page 68 reconstructions of marine events, e.g. the arrival of Duchess of Argyle and Jane Gifford in 1842 in Auckland. Exhibited: ASA 1907–20, NZ International Ex, Chch 1906–07. Represented: Turnbull, APL.
