PORTER, Frederick James 1883–1944

Born Auckland: studied painting with C. F. Goldie and then c.1907 went to Melbourne to study art and thence to Paris to the Julian Academy for three years. Worked in England as a professional artist; was draughtsman and designer for the British Government during 1914–18 war. Was a member of the London Group from 1916, Vice-president 1925–35; painted in France and England. Died in Essex. He painted landscapes and still lifes. 1927 shared a show page 197 at Lefevre Gallery, London with Roger Fry. Work included Centennial Ex Wtn 1940. Represented: ACAG, NAG, McDougall, and the Tate Gallery, London.
