John Rochfort (1832-1894) was born in London, and was apprenticed to civil engineering under Sir I. K. Brunei. After returning to England to publish his Adventures, Rochfort came back to New Zealand and settled at Motueka.

From the early eighteen-sixties he was involved in many important surveying and engineering works, including surveys on the West Coast, and the Nelson-Canterbury boundary. He produced a report on the Denniston coal fields, and laid out the town of Greymouth. By 1871 Rochfort had moved to the North Island, where he surveyed the route for the Rimutaka Railway. In 1882 he began reconnaisance for the North Island Main Trunk Railway between Marton and Te Awamutu, which was completed in 1887. Rochfort died in 1894.
