Freshers' Tourney

Freshers' Tourney

At about 1.25 last Saturday afternoon, players took the courts for the first matches in the Tennis Club's popular Freshers Tournament. At about a quarter to seven Kathleen Pears and John O'Shea climbed the steps after defeating Miss N. Carver and 8. Devine in the final, 26/24.

Capably controlled by B. W. Brock, with Chairman E. G. Budge, and Secretary F. D. Christensen in useful support the Tournament attracted over 70 entries. A gentle breeze tempered the warmth of the late summer's sun to make playing conditions very pleasant.

Freshers noticed wielding promising racquets included Gladys Rainbow and 'Tavia Turton among the girls, and Cope, a ranked player in the Manawatu, among the men.

Not the least enjoyable feature of a Freshers' Tournament is the afternoon tea. Prepared and dispensed by Elizabeth Maclean. Ruth Singleton and Kathleen Pears, last Saturday's tea was well up to standard.
