Lerity is a feature of Tournament. On Easter Saturday Last year Evan de [unclear: Beary] dived into Thorndon Baths and swam a length fally colthed, for a bet of £1. When he got out he found the stakes had been doubled.

"Mac" Miller led the Otago hakas with such vim that he was reduced to a whisper and his lecture class of dental nurses were given drawing instead.

The four main colleges compete, Massey students forming part of the VUC team and Lincoln joining the CUC team. There has been a move to admit Massey to Independent status, hut apart from the difficulty of billets, finance, and rowing, the Tournament committee doubted whether the organisation could be handled satisfactorily until Massey achieved a higher proportion of degree or third and fourth year students.

Since 1902 Tournament has been run by a committee of eight, two delegates from each college. Amongst wellknown ex-delegates are Mr. Justice Smith; Chancellor of the University, and Mr. G. F. Dixon, today president of many VUC clubs.

Some years back VUC presented a carved wooden spoon ornamented with paua shell for the college gaining least points. Time and again the bread we cast upon the waters has returned to us, in the form of that same wooden spoon. Last year, as the trophy case pathetically showed, we won this spoon and the athelties' wooden spoon as well—the only trophies to come to VUC. There is, of course, the first boxing shield which we won in 1941. the last time it was competed for. In 1945 the Ilott Boxing Shield replaced the earlier trophy, which no longer held space for shields.

Another notable prize is the Horn Trophy, won by the team whose members can quaff fastest; one handle apiece containing, of all things, beer. The idea that the contest is based on quantity, not speed, is a popular misconception.

Eligibility is based on attendance at lectures last year, and on your belonging to VUC clubs. Freshers can compete in Winter Tournament, but not in Faster, because we have found in the past that some people will put up with three or four weeks' lectures for the sake of going to Tournament, and then never come near the University again.

Several national champions are taking lectures at the college but will not be eligible for the Tournament team, either because they are freshers or because they do not belong to the VUC club.

Women's Hockey

The crowded and enthusiastic annual general meeting of the Women's Hockey Club showed that interest in the club has not declined. Officers were elected as follows:—Patron, Mr. B. kean President, Mr. G. Dixon; Vice-President. Mesdames Fell. Richardson and Naylor. Misses Charles, Barker and Dr. Filmer. Club Capt. Ruth Russell; Sec. Frances Fyfe; Treas., Christine Spencer: Committee, Vivienne Rich. Daisy Filmer and a Fresher member to be elected.

A vote of thanks was passed in appreciation of the work and leadership or the retiring Club Captain, Daisy Filmer. Those who, owing to the new ruling of the NZU Winter Tournament Committee, are ineligible for Tournament are forming a "Grad's" team. The club hopes to field five teams this year. VUC Blues were awarded to the following: Jean Miller. Marion Kiddle. Nan Thompson, Ruth Russell, Una Renner.

Practices will be held in the Gym. from 6-8 on Thursdays and it is hoped to arrange a pactice on Kelburn Park 1-2 p.m. on Tuesdays. All beginners are especially welcome.
