Although the attendance at the AGM was disappointing as usual, we nevertheless managed to elect a hard-working committee for the coming season. With Ken Bliss as club captain and Doris Thorgood as secretary, together with the record entries received so far, prospects for the season indeed look bright.

We hope to field six men's and three women's teams in the inter-club competitions. There is a possibility that we'll have two teams in the senior A grade (men's) as we should have nine or ten players of senior calibre. It is almost certain that we shall have the services of Maurie Doyle, a well-performed and highly-ranked player in Wellington. We also hope to lure two young players in the persons of Don Robinson, a match-winning machine, and Peter Armstrong, a delightful stroke maker. The other senior players include Jack Walls, last season's champion. Ben O'Connor, top man for many years; Hugh Davidson, top man for most of last season and title-holder (with Jack Walls) of Wellington doubles championship. Also Ron Arbuckle, ex-Wellington junior champion—a smashing player; also Rolly Ferkins, a well-performed veteran who still wields a mean racquet, and Bill Pritchard—A youthful (blonde) performer, champion of Thorndon club last season.

At the moment it is difficult to predict anything of the women (It always is) but it is expected that we will have our top team in the senior B grade. Avis Held, who did so well in tournament will probably be the top player. Other players of note are Bice Young, Gillian Foden and Doris Thorgood. It is possible that there are a number of dark horses among the new members. We shall soon find out!

The opening ceremony will be held on the 24th, and out patron, Mr. Eichelbaum, will hit the first ball over the net at 2 p.m.

We hope this article will serve as an invitation to all freshers to Join the ranks of our club and it is also a plea to those outstanding players who play for other clubs to consider playing for Varsity.
