Tramping

Tramping

You probably heard rumours about it at the time, but in case you're still wondering what all the fuss was about we can now definitely assure you that the Allaway Dickson Memorial Hut was opened in April this year. The opening was such a success it was unanimously decided to rebuild Tawhai so we can open that too. We're also going to bridge Smith's Creek some time before Christmas.

Apart from the jubilee celebrations this year we held a special Tramping Club Jubilee Reunion. This, too, should become a regular feature of club life.

1948 was a year of depression for the dub. We, started to build our hut, and after the first spurt of enthusiasm, club support dropped alarmingly. It was difficult to gather more than a dozen for a working party and each week they were the same dozen. However, now there's not so much work to do, more and more people are taking up this ancient and honourable sport.

A few very successful trips were run during the year, a fine-weather northern crossing at King's birthday weekend, and a trip to Totara Flats at the same time, a winter southern crossing, one or two trips to the new hut and to the Orongorongo's and a few other odd expeditions hither and thither in the local hills.

Under the expert tuition of Phil Gardner we also ran a very successful climbing school with two trips to Titahi Bay and one to Ohakune. We're also running two trips to the mainland this Christmas—a great mob to the Dart and the Rees—this is new country to the club, and also a small party to our favourite stamping ground—the Spensers.

So, apart from our financial position, its been a happy year. You should join us some time.
