Salient. An Organ of Student Opinion at Victoria College, Wellington, N.Z. Vol.12., No. 11. 29th September 1949

The Resolution As Passed

The Resolution As Passed

"This General Meeting of the VUC Students' Association, alarmed by the attempts of the College Authorities to restrict the free expression of student opinion in "Salient", declares that opinions expressed in "Salient" should be subject only to the legal restraints normally applying to the Press in this country and that they should not be subject to any other restriction or censorship whatsoever, except as may be laid down by the Constitution of the Students' Association.

"This Association upholds the right of the Editor of "Salient" to print the Editorial on Weir House and the article "Out Heritage Reviewed" in recent issues of "Salient", and considers that the printing of these articles does not Justify the action of the Principal and the Professorial Board in banning "Salient" in the College and fining the Editor. We strongly resent this unwarranted interference in a legitimate student activity, and declare that the action taken by the College Authorities is incompatible with the principles of liberty and free speech.

"Therefore, we strongly protest against the action of the Professorial Board in fining the Editor of "Salient" five pounds for printing the article "Our Heritage Reviewed", and express our determination to resist the imposition of this fine. This victimisation of an individual student for pursuing the traditional policy of free speech and criticism in Victoria College is completely unacceptable to this Association.

"We Instruct the Executive to convey to the Professorial Board and the College Council the terms of this resolution.

"We further instruct the Executive:
"(a)To support an application by Mr. Jenkins to the Professorial Board for a re-hearing of the case;
"(b)To support an appeal to the College Council against the Professorial Board's fining of the Editor."
