VUC Athletes Do Well In Summer Season

VUC Athletes Do Well In Summer Season

Victoria has reason to be proud of her athletes; throughout the season the green and gold has forged ahead to become the premier club in the Wellington province.

At Auckland, Dave Batten performed with distinction to get third placing in the 440 yards. At the National Championships he won both the 220 and the 440—the former in record time and only one tenth of a second outside Mel Patton's winning effort in the Olympic Games. It was unfortunate that Dave could not reproduce this effort at the Empire Games, as his time was faster than that of Johnny Treloar.

Another member of the club who performed well at the National Champs was Helen Burr, who was placed third in the women's high jump. She was unlucky not to be picked for the Games team as, with correct coaching, she would not have been extended to get in the first six.

Barbara Hill, Ewan Hyslop and Ikar Lisslenko all competed at the Nationals, and their efforts would have given them places in other years.

Another notable performer at Napier was Des Kelly (now at O.U.), he will be walking for us at Christ-church and should be a good even bet in the mile walk.

With the Tournament Shield in view most of the athletes have settled down to hard training; but we are very short of girls, and although there are two outstanding members in the Club we need at least two more sprinters to clinch our hold over the Women's Athletic Shield at Tournament.

Our club night is held every Monday on Kelburn Park, where competent coaches are always in attendance. On March 25 the Annual VUC Sports are held so watch the main notice board for details. On March 31 line up for the "Maiden Stakes" at the Annual Ball. This time it is being held in the Roseland Cabaret and the pace should be a cracker!

For details about the Club ring Gerry Fox. 46-781, or Doug Mitchell 51-618.

Congratulations to Des Dowse and P. Fleischel, for their effort in the 100 yards men's breastroke at the Wellington Centre Swimming Champs. They were first and third respectively in that event. But where were the rest of the club? Surely they could have done something to notch a couple of places more than that, when the overall standard for the evening was far from good?
