While slightly lacking in actual numbers, the V.U.W. Arts Festival Orchestra gave well balanced performances of Handel's "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" and the Andante from Cassation. K.33, No. 1 by Mozart. Both works were conducted with considerable taste and style by Robin MacOnie.

Jennifer McLood and Murray Brown were called on at short notice to play the Mozart Sonata for Piano Duet in D major. Evelyn Killoh then performed the Marcello E minor viola sonata, and displayed control and warm tone, especially in the slow movements.

Don Clark (piano) gave a very wall interpreted, assured rendition of the well-known Variations Serieuses, Op. 54 by Mendelssohn. Although much of this music is difficult technically, Mr Clark got round most of the notes and produced a very good tone into the bargain.

To provide an exhilarating close to the evening Gloria Findley (clarinet) and Margaret Neilsen (piano) executed the Malcolm Arnold Sonatina. Both performers are possessed with a keen sense of rhythm, invaluable in a work of this kind. Written in three contrasting movements the short composition was a real "smash-hit" climax to the evening's music.
