Folk tv

A Televised Concert by University Folk Club last Wednesday was enjoyed by a large, but to begin with, self-conscious audience.

Three hours of folk singing was provided by student and professional singers.

The show was divided into two—the first half was televised and the performers were largely professional—the second half was performed by members of the University Folk Club.

The televised part of the show was impressive and backed by a nine-piece band —each item was well rehearsed to the point of slickness.

The audience had been given a song-sheet and. with the encouragement of a tv god of some kind who just about had a paroxysm every time they were meant to clap (all that was missing was a board saying "clap now") the rather self-conscious participation swelled to a roar.

Bas Tubert, as compere, gave the audience a pep talk to begin with—that is he told them to be a good audience and to Join in the fun, fun, fun, to sing loud, to clap when told and so on. The centre section of the audience was lit by a large spotlight and those sitting there sang with a fervid enthusiasm every time a camera looked their way.
