Food On Floors?
Food On Floors?

Dunedin—Students of the new future may eat their meals on the floor, according to the manager of the Otago Student Union (Mr. R. J. Abbott). He says large carpeted areas. without seats. are the coming thing in Australia.
Mr. Abbott, just back from an Adelaide conference of university union wardens, saw this innovation at Monash University, Melbourne, where up to 2000 students ate their lunch in a large carpeted concourse.
"Students like to sit on the floor. and this saves money on furniture." Mr. Abbott told NZSPA.
His views were supported by visiting English debaters Keith Ovenden and J. M. Burford, who also were impressed by the Monash system, particularly for events such as debates, talks, etc.
Mr. Abbott said Monash made concourses a major feature of its student building. "Where we have cut down on passage and foyer space and concentrated on room space, they hove developed their concourses as social areas."
